With Spring officially beginning tomorrow, I can’t help but think about the upcoming spring turkey season in Illinois. With the unyielding climate conditions that were bestowed upon us for the past few months, I covet those cool spring mornings on the forest floor where the gentle breeze blows and the scintillating sun washes away the deep, winter slumber of earlier months, and the woods come to life with vibrant colors, pulsating with vigor and energy.
There is no better sound then that produced by a gobbling Tom that echoes throughout the forest. There is that sharp silence that immediately follows as if every creature in the woods is taking notice. Even the wide array of birds serenading from the towering lush green trees stop and pay attention to the resonating sound.
If this is something that you have never experienced, then you are definitely missing out on the magic and serenity that the forest offers. The spring turkey season in Illinois runs from April 7th through May 8th and the hunter is allowed one gobbler or bearded hen per permit with a maximum of three. It’s also another reason to get that bow tuned up and ready to go. If you prefer to hunt with a shotgun, that is perfectly fine too.
